Summary: This study, grounded in debates on gender inequality, career barriers, and lifelong
learning, aimed to investigate how learning processes are configured among women
who face career barriers. It is based on the understanding that gender inequality in
the labor market constitutes a barrier that impacts women’s professional
development, manifesting itself in organizational, structural, and individual
dimensions. This is a qualitative study of an exploratory and descriptive nature,
characterized as an interpretive qualitative study. Data collection was carried out
through semi-structured interviews with 17 women, aged between 25 and 68 years,
residing in different regions of Brazilian territory, in addition to the analysis of
documents relevant to the phenomenon investigated. The interviews were examined
using the thematic content analysis technique, while the documents followed a
specific analytical protocol developed for this study. Based on the results, an
analytical framework was constructed showing how career barriers and support
networks influence learning, which occurs in formal, non-formal, and informal ways.
Among the research findings, professional changes (reconfigurations of knowing and
doing) and deeper transformations (identity reconfiguration and re-signification of the
trajectory) stand out. It is concluded that the learning of women who faced career
barriers goes beyond the acquisition of new competencies, also being characterized
as transformations in their identities.
