Summary: This dissertation is qualitative research, the objective of which is to understand the
working experience of salespeople in retail stores in shopping malls, from the perspective
of the Theory of Work Psychology (TWP) (BLUSTEIN 2006; DUFFY et al., 2016a )
considering economic restrictions, marginalizations, volition and access to decent work.
Fifteen salespeople from different stores located in a shopping mall, in the metropolitan
region of Espírito Santo, participated through a semi-structured interview (BAUER;
GASKEL, 2002; FLICK, 2008; BRINKMANN, 2015). The data were subjected to
content analysis (BARDIN, 1979; COLBARI, 2014) and resulted in four categories for
analysis: Personal Trajectory; Social Bookmarks; Shopping Center Context; and Results
and Impacts of Work. After analyzing the data, it was observed that social marginalization
and economic constrants, from childhood to adulthood, had a negative effect on
individuals' volition throughout their career. As a result, these workers are led to work in
the shopping malls seeking to meet their needs of survival and power, but are faced with
long working hours, little rest time and insecurity. Therefore, the contributions of this
study are the investigation of labor relations in shopping malls, a context little explored
by the Administration; expanding the understanding of TWP in the Brazilian context and
from a qualitative perspective. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute, in a practical
context, to fostering debate and reflections on career obstacles in shopping mall retail
between employers and employees.
