Summary: This dissertation aims to understand how female civil servants at Ifes self-manage their
careers, considering the career barriers related to gender. Research was carried out
whit18 women, using a semi-structured interview, and the data was analyzed by
content analysis technique. The theoretical framework was based on the Social
Cognitive Career Theory was used (Lent; Brown; Hackett, 1994). This theory made it
possible to understand the career development of these women, considering the
contextual variables present when they entered the public sector. In this study, it was
possible to identify that reconciling study and work, household chores, caring for the
family, gender prejudice, among others, were barriers that interfered with their pursuit
of a public career, and that most of these barriers were mitigated by the perceived
support, determination, and resilience of these women in reaching their desired career
goals and remaining in it.
