Summary: The National Student Assistance Program (PNAES) was created with the purpose of
increasing young people’s retention in federal public education. Preferably, the students
served should come from public schools and have a per capita income of up to one and a half
minimum wages. It can be inferred that the program aims to assist students from less
privileged and vulnerable backgrounds in the country, seeking to reduce social inequalities in
access to culture and education. At the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and
Technology of Espírito Santo (Ifes), Campus Ibatiba, the PNAES is operationalized through
the Student Assistance Policy (PAE), which includes food, transportation, monitoring,
didactic/uniform, and financial aids. It is essential to evaluate the impacts of this policy vis-àvis its objective. Therefore, this qualitative research, characterized as a single-case study with
a critical approach, aimed to investigate whether the PAE at the Ibatiba campus of Ifes
contributes to students’ retention in the institution, analyzing it through Bourdieu’s Theory of
Reproduction (which posits that schools reproduce inequalities when they do not consider
their students’ cultural heritage). Data were collected through 49 semi-structured interviews
with students from the integrated technical high school (1st, 2nd, and 3rd years), former
students, legal guardians, teachers, and administrative staff. The analysis was conducted using
content analysis techniques. The research is expected to assist in evaluating the PAE at Ifes
Campus Ibatiba specifically and, more broadly, the PNAES.
