Summary: Innovation in general has become a vital component for the survival of organizations, and within innovations lies the process innovation. The processes of an organization are generated and improved through Business Process Management (BPM), however, there is a problem regarding the loss of innovation that originates from traditional BPM. This loss of innovation is caused by information that is not passed on and the lack of information fusion that leads organizations to lose valuable knowledge of their employees. In the present work the Social Software (SS) is presented as an alternative to the causes of the loss of innovation. The SS are online communication tools that allow wide participation and the construction of collaborative knowledge by its users. Only the use of SS may not be sufficient for innovation, so two aspects have been added as mediators of the relationship between SS and process innovation. The first aspect is a collaborative approach to processes known as Social BPM that aims to involve the human factor in the process life cycle. The second aspect is knowledge management as an auxiliary factor to the development of best practices to take advantage of SS outputs. To test the impact of SS on process innovation and its mediations, a questionnaire was applied with the professionals of ABPMP-Brazil, obtaining 79 responses. The data were analyzed using the structural equation modeling in the free software R, with the plspm package. Analyzing the data, it was possible to conclude that SS positively and significantly impact process innovation. Subsequently, each of the mediating variables was analyzed separately and both mediated the relationship between SS and process innovation, but the mediation effect of knowledge management was greater than the effect of social BPM. When the two mediators are included in the model simultaneously the social BPM loses its mediation effect, but the knowledge management remains mediating the relationship. In practical terms, organizations should invest in knowledge management to make better use of the outputs generated by the SS.
