Summary: The objective of this qualitative study is to understand the process of formation of social representations of competence for professionals working in the central unit of administration of a federal teaching institution. Data were obtained through focus group sessions in which participants were divided into two job categories: administrative technicians and managers. Four focus group sessions were held in the period of August to November 2015 with a total of 21 professionals classified according to their job category. The first session was conducted with three managers; the second, third and fourth sessions included six, five and seven professional administrative technicians, respectively. The data collected from participant discussion were transcribed and analyzed using the Alceste software, which serves to reveal the essential information of a text by means of the most significant elements that make up the discursive as a whole. Following software analysis, data were evaluated alongside the Framework of the Theory of Social Representations and aspects related to a societal approach. The analysis enabled researchers to acquire a better perspective of the three dimensions of the constituent elements of social representation of competence for the subjects within the management structure under assessment: evaluation, context, competence as delineated by the CHA guidelines (knowledge, skills and attitudes) and competence as practical intelligence. In this way it was possible to obtain a more profound understanding of the meaning and process of forming social representations of competence, highlighting the experiences of individuals, social memory as well as similarities and differences among social thought within the context of the organization under consideration.
