Summary: This study has as objective to analyze how the faculty of one determined private institution of superior education believes to develop competence in its pupils throughout the formation, in graduation level, becoming them competent to the work market. One searched to analyze the conception of competence that the faculty of the institution has, to analyze the praxis that professors believe to be important in the development of competence and, in parallel, to verify the institutional actions that promote stimulation to the development of competence in the pupils. This is a qualitative research. The cartographic method is the reference adopted by the researcher and the semi-structured interview, directed to the Faculty of the researched institution, is the chosen tool for data collection. The analysis allowed to understand that the establishment of competence development is complex, non linear, and that the praxis that favors it are, in the studied organization, accomplished in a structured and segregative form. The notion of competence development is connected to the professor’s degree level, and they believe that it is the most important differential for quality and a professional model to be aimed. The production of competence stands out through production of incompetence or through school failure.
