Summary: The objectives of this dissertation is to contribute for the discussion of
the Social Responsibility, trying to relate speech and practice and, in a
more specific way, analyze the socially responsible administration of
Companhia Siderúrgica de Tubarão (CST). The methodology begins
with bibliographical and documental researches, and a case study,
using semi-structured interviews as main instrument of data collection.
Concerning information analysis, the actions were grouped in internal
extent, WHERE employees and their relatives are the target-public, and
external extent, the community in general is the target. Indicators of
Social Responsibility proposed by Ethos Institute, a reference in this
subject in Brazil, were taken as base for categorization.
Among the conclusions, it is emphasized that the society has
demanded a social role from companies, and the latter have
developed such role. Thus, social responsibility is presented as a way
of sustentation of economical system, not yet as a strategic factor,
which heads the decisions and actions of the companies. In the
studied company, it is noticed that its actions concerning social and
environmental issues are recent and still not viewed as a strategic
factor. The company's Environmental Administration is more
highlighted than its social actions. Advances in environmental control,
in commitments with the community, in the transparency of actions
and mainly in the syndical relationships (WHERE the companiy's
authoritarism prevail) are necessary. In spite of that there is the
recognition of the company's effort in the search for development of its
social responsibility in both internal and external dimensions, which
have granted it some rewarded actions.
