Summary: Considering the deep changes occurred in the work relations during the 1980s and 1990s decades and the rising of the concept of competence, this dissertation aims to describe how the introduction of this concept in a company changes the conceptual, social and experimental dimensions of qualification. In order to describe the usage of these two concepts, qualification and competence, a case study has been made in the locomotive maintenance area of a large mining and logistic company. The data was collected from company documents and from semi-structured interviews. The qualitative analysis of the contents was used to interpret the data from pre-established categories. The study revealed that the usage of the concept of competence in the company did change the concept of qualification, weakening its conceptual and social dimensions and strengthening its experimental dimension.
