Summary: The present dissertation discusses the changes in the work processes from the family production system to the Toyotist system as a means of contextualizing the approach to competences. This is an important subject in the academic universe of administration as well as in the business environment. There has been a lot of research into this matter and, in general, the analyses highlight the fact that the appropriation of this concept is far from being unanimous. Quite the opposite, it is of great complexity and heterogeneity. Far from intending to exhaust the subject, but with the objective of contributing with new references to the debate, the aim of this text is to investigate how the mobilizations, articulations and deliveries of individual competences occur. This is a case study of qualitative approach to which workers from the functional area known as continuous casting were intentionally chosen as the universe of research which took place in a major steel plant, CST, located in Vitória, capital city of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. To draw a conceptual fundamental, it was necessary to briefly look at the development of the term “competence” and at the advent of a competence pattern as well as a theoretical rereading of the Japanese pattern of production, Taylorism and Fordism as paradigms of production systems. As field research took place, there was the need for a characterization of the modus operandi of the sector researched as well as the identification of the competences required by the formal policies of human resources management, the description of the competences mobilized by the group of workers in the point of view of the managers and the investigation into the understanding from the workers about mobilization, articulation and use of their competences. The main results of this study reveal the mobilization, articulation and delivery of many competences, referred to as “knowledges”, always in a very personal way subject to the availability of personal and environment resources - what accounts for the subjective character of the theme discussed here.
