Summary: Discussions on the topic of sustainability are increasingly recurrent in academic and organizational environments. This theme has been approached as a particularly interdisciplinary, multidimensional concept, aimed at a systemic approach, centered directly and indirectly on the company´s business. The discussion about the pillars of sustainability in undergraduate courses in administration contributes not only to the formation of more capable managers to act with more assertiveness in contemporary organizations, but can also bring companies greater recognition due to the promotion of sustainable development in their policies and practices. This study aimed to describe
and analyze how formal education influenced the understanding of the notion of sustainability of undergraduate students in administration at a private HEI in the interior of Bahia. Qualitative research was carried out, with data collected in semi-structured interviews analyzed using the content analysis technique, and also collected through document research, making it possible to seek more detailed information about the administration course and the investigated HEI. Sixteen administration graduates from a private HEI in the city of Feira de Santana-Bahia participated in the study, thus, it was possible to obtain results on how education models can influence the educational process. It was concluded that the interviewed students were able to obtain knowledge
about sustainability both with professional and personal experiences, as well as with what was passed during the course, although the HEI has not explored these concepts in depth. The development of this study is not only intended to meet the proposed objectives, but to contribute to future research that can broaden the debate on sustainability and sustainable development as a mandatory part of the curricula of management courses, serving as a reflection to understand how these themes benefit the environment, society and companies.
