Summary: The objective of this dissertation was to understand, through the ergological lens, the dramatics in the use of the body-self in the exercise of the hairdressing profession, and the knowledge produced in the work activity of these professionals. In order to achieve the proposed objective, a discussion of ergological concepts was carried out in the theoretical references. However, it was also necessary to address the concept of precarious work due to the demands of the research findings involving the work of professional hairdressers. In addition, a brief discussion was made about the relationship between person and body, beauty and aesthetics, and the importance of the hairdresser's work in the transformation process of personal beauty throughout history. The research approach was of qualitative descriptive nature and had as a means of data collection the direct observation, a semi-structured script interview, and the technique of instruction to a double. Eight hairdressers who worked in two beauty salons in the city of Vitória-ES participated in the research, named in this work as Salão Belezura and Salão Belo. Data were collected from October 24, 2019, to January 29, 2020, and analyzed using the content analysis technique, from the predetermined thematic categories “dramatics”, “body-self” and its two subcategories "uses of self" and "renormalization" and from the categories and subcategories that emerged from the research "conflicts and dilemmas"; "unexpected results: not everything is beauty"; "fear and insecurity"; "the precarious side of beauty"; "Labor relations: neither an employee nor a boss. We live on commission"; "the consequences of the workload"; "new knowledge" and "the mastery of the work and knowledge acquired in practice”, totaling 4 categories and 8 subcategories from theory triggers. The obtained results show that the hairdressing profession fits the definition of precarious work considering that, among the dramatics of the use of the body-self found, it stands out long working hours, lack of minimum work guarantees, and no future security. As for the knowledge produced in the profession, it can be highlighted the ability of hairdressers to adapt product protocols in search for better results in their services. Finally, this research questions whether the use of oneself by oneself happens in the work activity, including then the first and second anticipation (DURRIVE, 2016; DURRIVE, 2019; SCHWARTZ, 2013; SCHWARTZ, 2017) or if it starts even before the activity happens, emerging from there the idea of counteracting work activity, which would be the use of oneself by oneself making the work activity not be performed by the worker, something that opens the way for new ergological studies.
