Summary: In project management, planning is considered one of the greatest contributors to
success. Recent researches have focused on the behavior of this relationship in
various contexts. The present study investigates the effect of risk and participation of
trained professionals on the relationship between the use of planning techniques and
the project success dimensions in Brazil, based on the analysis of 257 project
managers’ responses in a quantitative approach through Structural Equations
Modeling. The results show that the level of risk moderates the impact of the use of
planning techniques on the measure of success Project Efficiency, while does not
moderate the impact of planning on the measure of success Project Effectiveness.
Furthermore, the findings also show that the professional training degree does not
moderate the relationship between the use of planning techniques and the project
success in both Project Efficiency and Project Effectiveness dimensions. Among the
practical implications, it was possible to deduce that improving the use of planning
techniques is a manner that Brazilian companies follow to mitigate the impact of risks
on cost overrun and schedule overrun (Project Efficiency), although this practice is
not enough to mitigate the impact of risks on technical performance and customer
satisfaction (Project Effectiveness). Regarding the participation of trained
professionals, it is concluded that having a project team composed of a large number
of trained employees does not reduce the planning dependence by the firm. Thus, in
projects from different industries and with different levels of trained professionals,
according to the specific demands of each type of project, companies should
dedicate the same importance in planning to achieve success.
