Summary: The present study aimed to analyze the work situations of nursing professionals - nurses and nursing technicians - at the Emergency and Emergency Unit (UE) of a Federal University Hospital located in the state of Espírito Santo. It is a research with a qualitative approach, carried out by means of documentary survey, semi-structured and individual interview with 16 participants, being 08 nurses and 08 nursing technicians, and participant observation with generation of field diary for a period of approximately 3 months. The research had Ergology as a theoretical-analytical perspective. The analyzes made possible to identify several challenges present in work situations, such as lack of physical structure and material in the sector, absenteeism of work team members. The results were treated through content analysis, generating the following categories a posteriori: a) Knowledge in check: an intellectual discomfort; b) The values present in daily activities; c) The use of self-wrapped in the normalizations of the work. It was concluded that the work is anchored in specific norms and routines, but there are challenges and unforeseen situations to be faced by professionals in an environment that is always unfaithful, such situations are circumvented by the nursing professionals of the EU making use of the body-self, the which is based mainly on individual and collective knowledge, practical and theoretical knowledge, and also on the values that have or were shared among the peers in the work process.
