Summary: The objective of this study was to understand the challenges of implementing the
Contratos.gov information system at the Federal Institute of Education of Espírito Santo
(IFES) from the lens of sociomateriality, within the perspective of agential realism. The study
presents the system as a sociomaterial phenomenon and investigates how the adoption of this
technology influences and reconfigures organizational practices, highlighting the complex
interactions between human agents and technological elements that characterize the contract
management environment. A qualitative research approach was chosen, utilizing shadowing
and interview to the double for data collection. For data analysis, a thematic categorical
content analysis was developed, which allowed for a description of the relationships between
different agents that enable the engendering of various practices that constitute "contract
management" at IFES. The study's conclusions showed that the sociomateriality approach
allows us to understand how social and material elements interact in the configuration of
organizational practices, highlighting the complexity involved in the implementation of digital
technologies in institutional environments. Thus, the research results indicated that the
success of the implementation of Contratos.gov at IFES is intrinsically linked to the
institution's ability to promote continuous training programs and ensure integrated contract
management, respecting the sociomaterial particularities and interdependencies that permeate
the process. The sociomaterial entanglements in the everyday uses of the system revealed
challenges that demonstrate the complex relationships among the involved agents, such as
staff limitations, human resistance to incorporating technologies into work, or the importance
of adapting and transforming regulations, technologies, and artifacts to carry out contract
management activities within the organization.
