Summary: This research tries to understand the changes in the work situations of the Technicians of the mechanical test laboratory of a Steel company of the Southeast of Brazil, seeking to investigate how the workers organize themselves to manage the distance between what is imposed to them through the standards / prescriptions and what will actually be done in their activities, highlighting issues that have not been explored before. The qualitative research was carried out based on the analytical approach of Ergology and the instruments of data production were documental analysis in the organization focus, direct observation of the activities in the mechanical test laboratory and semi-structured interviews with the workers. Six technicians were interviewed individually, using a script to conduct interviews. Together with the notes from field observations, the interviews were transcribed and analyzed in the light of Ergology, using the content analysis of Bardin (2011). In order to reach the objective, this dissertation sought to identify the prescriptions and controls existing for the activities of the workers and to understand how they recognize the existing standards, observing the activities in the laboratory and analyzing the work processes in the organization. It was found that these workers value highly the operational procedures as a tool to assist in the execution of the tasks, but criticize the way they are elaborated and presented making them quite extensive and tiring, making reading and consultation difficult. That is, these technicians request more condensed, practical and attractive procedures making the consultation easier, faster and enjoyable. The technicians are optimistic about the changes, as the company is evaluating a new model of procedures to replace the current model and are hoping that the improvements to be implemented in this new model, making the procedures much simpler, attractive than the model in force. It was evidenced that some unforeseen occurrences are only healed by the use of self by the other, showing that however complete a prescription, the experience of a colleague supplies eventual contingencies. The testimonies show that workers know the distance between the actual and the prescribed, and strive and diminish it, for their own safety, but it is a hard work, since the activity is much more complex than the standards that try to reproduce it. It is believed that this study may contribute to the clarification of the situations experienced in the steel industry, and also to the academic progress, since it enabled the proximity with the ergological approach, marking the renormalizations not yet explored in this field of study - Ergology in the steel industry in Brazil.
