Summary: The analysis of management practices and labor relations in the Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos (ECT) was the goal that guided the research for this dissertation. The focus of analysis runs the various socio-historical contexts in which management practices and organization of work were employed in the company, as well as respond to it the social relations of production. To achieve the stated objective, specific questions guided the conduct of work: 1) As the history of ECT is related to attempts at "modernization” and streamlining of public services in Brazil? 2) What was the context in which there were reforms of productive processes in ECT? 3) What are the characteristics of management practices used in production units operating home delivery of ECT? 4) How the social relations of production to configure the switching units and relate to management practices in ECT work? For the implementation of the research work, there was a documentary analysis, interviews with mail and a direct observation of work activities in a home-delivery center. Thus, it appears that the modernization process of ECT monitors trends constant updating of management practices consonant with capitalist dynamics, evidenced by the influence that the rationalization process had on the organization, both in the 1930s and 1940s, when the main feature of the process was to create a workforce able to discipline and factory work, and in the organization of the work in the 1970s, during which taylorism was the main technique used. In this context, it was observed that authoritarianism, control and rationalization characterized labor relations. In the 1990s, ECT start a restructuring process in order to implement management techniques with guidance lean production in its operations in an operation that aims to consolidate the industrial production of services within the company. Therefore, it was the combination of tools and technical guidance and the taylorism and lean production in operation investigated, indicating that a hybrid management practices in production, an aspect that impacts the social relations of production. In this sense, the practices of production management model used by the ECT labor relations, characterized by authoritarian managers, conflicts between workers and managers, as well as dissent among workers.
