Summary: Business incubators are innovative environments that promote entrepreneurship. Hence, their purpose is to foster new projects that may become great businesses. Critical success factors are elements responsible for enhancing businesses performance. In this work, critical success factors are variables that are determining to nourish businesses competitiveness, thus improving their organizational processes and ensuring their survival. The objective of this study was to identify the critical success factors of business incubators located in the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. For this purpose, multiple case studies were conducted in five business incubators by employing documental analysis and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was performed by applying the method of content analysis through the software IRAMUTEQ. Among the critical success factors identified, the following are highlighted: funding from the government of Espirito Santo, workgroup capacitation,
institutional support, partnership network, following-up of businesses from business incubators and governance. Therefore, this study stands out as a subside to business incubator managers, so they can revise their actions and pay special attention to factors not considered previously.
